Narrowing Down the Mascot Search
Norte Vista High School is one step closer to a new identity. On January 13, student representatives, alumni, and staff met to analyze results from a November poll that drew 500 participants. While one option earned 50% of the initial vote, the committee narrowed a list of 16 candidates down to a final three to ensure a thorough selection process. Two people who were at the meeting were Brooklyn Marcial, a junior, and Principal Jason Marquez.
Marcial says, “We had each student representative and also the adults that were there each pick two and justify why those are their top two. Basically it was kind of unanimous for the top one, and we had to decide on the other two.”
When talking about the meeting, Marquez says, “It was emotional, you know. There’s people who want to stick with the name Braves, but in the end, with the assembly bill in the state law, we have to change. There’s no choice”.
The final vote will take place just before the February break via a Google Form distributed in Braves Academy. Once the student body selects a winner, the choice moves to the school board for approval. While a finalized mascot is expected by March, the full re-branding of jerseys and the athletic field will take more time.
Once the results are reviewed over the February break, an official announcement will be made on February 23rd. Mr. Marquez emphasized that once a logo is selected, the school will work with an artist to finalize designs for football helmets and uniforms.
“When we decide on our logo, we’ll have an artist come in and help us start putting together what our logo might look like,” Marquez said.
