Cross Country Coach Rafael Perez retires
After nearly nine years of coaching, cross country coach Rafael Perez announced he will be stepping away from the school’s programs to focus on his family and continue growing as an educator.
During his time coaching, Perez helped transform the team into one of the school’s most competitive athletic programs, earning league championships and consistently qualifying athletes for CIF and state competition.
Many athletes say Perez’s impact went far beyond running.
Senior Brandon Matias (12), said his experience in cross country helped him grow throughout high school, and Perez played a major role in his journey.
“He gave really good advice about life after high school,” Matias said. “I was really inspired by how far he’s taken the team over the years.”
“He taught me more than just running, he made me believe in myself,” said Junior Natalene Ocampo. “Cross country isn’t about being the fastest, it’s about having fun, and I would have never learned that if I didn’t have a coach like Perez.”
Perez said one of his proudest accomplishments was creating the team’s Legacy Award, which recognized athletes who made a lasting impact on the program and supported their teammates. He explained that the award was not handed out every year, because athletes truly had to earn it through leadership and dedication.
As he prepares to leave, Perez said he hopes the program continues growing even after his time as coach. “I hope that I initiated enough of that foundational work,” Perez said. He added that he believes the current junior class has strong leadership potential and confidence to continue building the team’s legacy.
Although students are sad to see him leave, many say they respect his decision to prioritize family and appreciate the lasting impact he had on the team and school community. For many runners, Perez’s legacy will not only be remembered through wins and accomplishments, but through the positive environment and life lessons he brought to the program.
“The training wheels are off now.” Perez said
