With Prom season around the corner, PBIS club had an amazing opportunity to help out not only their school but their fellow classmates. They partnered with Friar Tux to give students discounts on rentals and a portion of the sales went back to our school. A red carpet event sponsored by Friar Tux took place in the quad on April 8, 2024.
Friday, April 19, 2024, at Silver Lakes Equestrian, Norte Vista students gathered for their highly anticipated 2024 prom. Around the venue are various activities for the students to enjoy, including a game truck, photo booth, caricature artist, karaoke station, horse and carriage, marshmallow station, and the big hit this year: a banda.
“Many people do not want to come to prom because they do not dance. They will think that they will not have fun. So we tried to sprinkle in some different things,” activities director Mr. Hughes said.
The school wanted to have everyone in attendance have an enjoyable time. Not knowing how to dance or not liking to dance was not an excuse for this year’s prom. With many activities to enjoy, the students had various options to choose from.
The highlight of the night was our prom queen and king Vanshika Sharma and Seiya Silva. They competed against many other seniors for the crown.
“I wanted to run for prom queen because there was a tutorial going on in my AVID class. Then one of my AVID tutors suggested I run and my group agreed. So I was like, Why not?” Sharma said.
“What made me run was my friend Daira, because she was running so I was like, I should too.” Silva said.
With all the overwhelming stress of campaigning, It can be very stressful for the candidates. But Sharma and Seiya had lots of support from their peers.
“I was overwhelmed with so much support because I thought most of them hated me, but I guess not. I guess all these four years of just working, volunteering, and getting involved just paid off” Said Sharma.
“I felt like, I don’t want to make it sound corny or cliche but I felt warm and fuzzy inside knowing that my peers and even teachers supported me. It just made me feel like, ‘Oh shoot, people know me and want me to win.’ It felt nice.” Silva said.
Both Seiya and Vanshika were starstruck when they heard their names get called as the winners. Both participants explain the emotions and thoughts running through their minds at that very moment.
“I was like, Oh God, that’s me. Oh like no way that it is me because all the other girls were so pretty. I was like damn. So I found it intersecting that I had won.” Sharma said.
“The first thing that came to mind was like, oh, shoot, wait, what’s happening? And then I hear barking in the background for my name. It was shocking. I don’t even know how to describe the feeling.” Silva said.
It was bittersweet for the seniors at their last-ever high school prom. Our activities director Mr. Hughes, reflects on his own senior prom.
” I went to prom my senior year when I was in high school long ago in 1995. I was a student in Tucson, Arizona. I remember my prom was not nearly as good as what we offer now at prom. I talk to some friends and we are envious of what students have now. We only had 4 hours of dancing and maybe a meal. That is why we try and save money to invest in those activities for our students to enjoy.” Mr. Hughes said.
Prom 2024 was a true fairy tale night for the students thanks to everyone who helped plan and organize the event.
