Kiss Land was one of the most underrated albums throughout his career.
Abel was completely unknown to one of the most influential R&B in a few short months. When it comes to Kiss Land, people believed it to be the first studio album made by Abel, when it was a sequel to Trilogy. For this project, Abel was inspired by horror movies, he wanted to capture the idea of being alone. In Trilogy, he was home, in Kiss Land, he’s in Japan all alone for a tour, from the fame he gained from Trilogy.
Throughout the album, he concludes that he has to leave Toronto and pursue his future. With the song “Adaptation,” we see that he even left a girl he was in love with in Toronto, he traded a real relationship with the tour life. The only way he could try to fulfill this was by sleeping with other women, but at some point, he even admits that he could’ve stayed with her, but chose the high life instead.
The Weeknd is singing about how he relates to the lifestyles of intimate workers because he can’t emotionally attach himself to any of the women he loves anymore.
This album is about Abel becoming new to fame and being overwhelmed by it, so overwhelmed that he makes many mistakes. Being on tour has turned him into someone unrecognizable, we hear this in the song “Kiss Land,” and by the end of the album he finally comes back home to the woman he loved, only to find out that she cheated on him.
In the final song “Tears In The Rain,” he tells himself to adjust to the fame and is no longer angry at the fact that she cheated, but he’s horrified by himself. It’s not that this girl could’ve been the one, but it might’ve been the last chance ever to have real love.
Kiss Land is a transition to the pop icon he is today, but also him transitioning into the scary world of Hollywood, which he explores in his further albums.
