On Sunday, October 19, 2025, around 9:30 CEST, four thieves dressed as construction workers broke into the Louvre Museum. The operation involved a mechanical lift, a truck used to carry the items, and motorcycles to help transport the thrift fee from the scene and the police. The robbers entered through a window by using miniature chainsaws to break through and enter the Galerie d’Apollon.
The goal of the robbery was to steal high-profile artwork, such as well-known paintings and many valuable artifacts. One of the items stolen was jewelry from the collection of Napoleon and Empress Eugenie, which was taken just seven minutes before they left the scene.
In order to successfully perform the heist, two of the thieves were threatening the guards while the other two were in charge of getting the jewelry.
This was an event that left France in a panic, as the Louvre Museum is considered the most secured museum in the world. Hence, it was a large concern to the people that it was able to be broken into so easily, as well as the fact that many valuables were missing. After the theft occurred, 60 investigators were put in charge of finding the culprits, but speculations arose that the culprits were a part of a criminal organization.
After this incident, the security measures have increased, and there are several new precautions that are being taken in order to prevent this from happening again. They have now begun to utilize sensors to accompany the cameras in the museum, and enforce the building to meet different security standards.
While it is known that there were four culprits, they arrested seven individuals, who were believed to be involved with the crime.
Due to the degree of the heist, it had officially been recognized by French President Emmanuel Macron and media outlets like CNN and The New York Times. This is due to it consisting of a theft that involves many high end valuables that hold a significant background.
On October 25, and October 29, of 2025 they captured a few of the suspects as they were attempting to flee the country and are currently being held under investigation. The investigation is ongoing while the suspects’ identities and involvement with the crime still are not confirmed.
