In today’s world, the educational system faces many problems. More specifically, the Trump Administration is currently trying to remove the Department of Education. This will significantly impact the school, such as funding for supplies and school clubs and programs, and it will also affect the students’ learning.
What we need to know about the Department of Education is that it gives federal loans and aid for education. It helps our school get its supplies, helps them support programs such as the IB programs, and all the other programs that we have. Without the Department of Education, we will lose all of the programs we have grown to love. If the Department of Education gets removed, it will affect the teachers because they will get lower wages and won’t have a lot of support in their classrooms.
Math teacher Marisol Gallardo talks about how she feels about what’s going on, what the impact will be, and how teachers will be affected.
“I am disappointed to hear that it is an opinion. There are many programs that help disadvantaged students to be successful and have equity in schools. I think eliminating the Dept. of Education would affect public schools negatively. It would widen the equity gap. Wealthier districts might thrive while poorer communities would fall farther. The biggest challenge for teachers would be with lack of funding, there could be an increase in class sizes and lower pay wage with less support in the classroom,” Gallardo said.
Many people don’t exactly know the full effects of what will happen to the school if it does get removed. But one person who doesn’t fully know what will happen to our school is Principal Jason Marquez. Marquez gives his opinion on what he thinks will happen.
“As a principal who’s responsible for 1800 students, it doesn’t make me feel comfortable. Everything here takes money. We just take, just refer to someone here, so we just take it the construction program, yeah, that takes a lot of money to fund. Because they buy wood, they buy nails. So if that funding goes away, that program goes away, IB. IB, we pay a lot of money to support the IB program. We don’t have that funding. IB goes away. So that’s my biggest fear is, if the funding is not there, the programs will go away. There’s nothing I can do about it, because I won’t have the funding to pay for it,” Marquez stated.
