Students from Global headed to the library to reflect and understand the importance of remembering 9/11. Multiple speakers such as citizens, and firefighters sat down in front of students, talking about their experience with the tragedy that happened on September 11, 2001, and how it continues to affect us today. Teachers, Amanda Bush, and Richard Dean also discussed about how important it is to remember and learn about 9/11 despite it being over two decades ago. They discussed with many groups to know more about the different aspects of 9/11, since sometimes you can’t understand the full story without other’s points of view.
“For the students that we have now, it is a historical event. So anything that they know is secondhand knowledge. It’s what they see online. It’s what they might see on Youtube or in the movies, which isn’t necessarily accurate all the time, and it doesn’t really tell the whole story. It’s a very complex thing that happened. So this gives us the opportunity to dive into all those different aspects of 9/11 itself,” said Ms. Bush.
While discussing about how 9/11 is important, Mr. Dean brings up the topic of what this tragedy setup throughout the last two decades, and how it’s not only affecting families, but also students who were refugees.
“It kind of sets up the 2000s, we started at 9/11 and then there’s wars in Iraq, there’s wars in Afghanistan. There are students who have family members who served in Afghanistan, and we just ended that war like two or three years ago. Stuff that happened 23 years ago, it still has ripples, because family members are effected, so it kind of sets the tone as to what’s happening in out current day life,” stated Mr. Dean.
Despite the speakers reflecting on the event, students also talked about why they believe it’s important to remember this tragedy. Arath Leyva, a senior, believed it affected the entire world due to how they responded to the terrorist attack. The catastrophe not only brought the world together, but it also shared the word to stop terrorism.
“9/11 is a big part of history, it has impacted our world with security and traveling in a big way. So I think it is important for students to remember the significance of this tragedy and how we can work on the future to prevent future tragedies and stop terrorism,” said Leyva.
